I find penguins at present the only comfort in life...
One can't be angry when one looks at a penguin
~ John Ruskin
This is the quote that begins Hazel's novel, Away With The Penguins. To celebrate its publication (and the fact it has been chosen for Richard & Judy's Book Club and BBC Radio 2's Book Club) Hazel ran a penguin art competition on Twitter. The remit was not to produce expert artwork but to try and capture the 'essence of penguinity.' With the permission of the participants, we have produced a penguin gallery from the entries. We hope this glorious plethora of penguins will bring you joy.
The winner in the adult category was Sarah, for both her imaginative penguin library display (left) and her lovely, evocative drawing (above)
There were two winners in the children's category. We fell in love with 12 year-old Grace's bookish penguin with the sweet expression (below left) and were stunned by the brilliance of 8 year-old Emelia's pumpkin lantern (below right)
But every penguin in this gallery is special. Take a look and see for yourself!
Thank you so much, everyone who contributed! Many thanks also go to Jonathan and to Ursula Franklin, Hazel's co-judges in this competition.
